From Proto-Albanian *aiu̯esi̯ā (Jokl L.-k. U. 34), from Proto-Indo-European *aiu̯-, *ai̯u- 'vital energy, vitality'. Cognate to Ancient Greek αἰές (aiés, “always”), Latin aevus (“eternity, age, time”) and Gothic aiws (aiws, “time, eternity, world”).
