From Latin epitaphium, from Ancient Greek ἐπιτάφιον (epitáphion, “funeral oration”), neuter form of ἐπιτάφιος (epitáphios, “over the grave”), from ἐπί (epí, “over”) + τάφος (táphos, “tomb, grave”).
