emp-

German

Etymology

Unique assimilation of ent- with Middle High German enp- for the Middle High German word entfinden with enphinden with the result empfinden. Likewise empfehlen and empfangen. This etymology is hypothetical on the base of those words from Middle High German. Compare Dutch ontfermen.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ʔɛmp] (forms the affricate [p͡f] with the following f)

Prefix

emp-

  1. Inseparable prefix that denotes a kind of negation to the verb. The older meaning of "ent" ‘gegen, entgegen’ (against, towards) is almost hidden. Compare empfangen <-> entgegennehmen <-> to receive. The 'emp' form of 'ent' is only kept in the three words mentioned above.
