Etymology
Either 1) A compound of privative e- + gjër soup (cf. egjëll, esëll), the second element to be compared with Lithuanian sóra (“millet”), thus, the result meaning is not millet > wild grass, or 2) a singularized plural of egër 'wild', or of an unattested *agër, the latter being identical with Ancient Greek ἀγρός (agrós, “field”) and άγριος (ágrios) 'wild, lit. belonging to the field'.
