From German Zucker, from Italian zucchero, from Arabic سُكَّر (sukkar), from Persian شکر (šekar), from Sanskrit शर्करा (śárkarā, “ground or candied sugar, originally meaning grit, gravel”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱorkeh₂ (“gravel, boulder”). Cognate to French sucre, from Spanish azúcar.
