From Old Irish commórtas (“comparison, competition, rivalry”), from commórad (“act of honouring, exalting in; act of helping, furthering, re-inforcing; act of celebrating, holding, waging (of functions, hunts, battles etc.); act of comparing”), verbal noun of commóraid (“holds, engages in (of battle, feast, hunt, etc.), celebrates, convenes”), from com- + móraid (“makes great, magnifies, exalts, glorifies; makes greater, increases; assembles, musters, convokes”).
