Etymology
Compare Daco-Romanian copil. Probably from South Slavic *kopylъ (“shoot, sprout; bastard”) (compare Serbo-Croatian ко̏пиле/kȍpile, Bulgarian ко́пеле (kópele)), from *kopati (“to dig, cultivate”). Also borrowed into Albanian kopil, Byzantine Greek κόπελος (kópelos). Alternatively an ultimately paleo-Balkan substratum word.
