From Old High German kalt, from Proto-Germanic *kaldaz, from *kalaną (“to be cold, freeze”), from Proto-Indo-European *gel-. Compare German kalt, German Low German kold, Dutch koud, West Frisian kâld, English cold, Icelandic kaldur, Swedish kall, Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐌻𐌳𐍃 (kalds). From the same Proto-Indo-European root as Sanskrit शरद (śarada, “autumn”), Persian سرد (sard, “cold”), Latin gelū (“frost”).
