From Sanskrit बुध्यते (budhyate), from the root बुध् (budh) from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewdʰ-. Cognate with Russian буди́ть (budítʹ, “to awaken”), Gothic *𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (*biudan), English bid, German bieten (“to bid, to offer”).
