From a medieval form bitulario, from *bitulo + -ario, a suffix which forms tree names. Given the tonic /i/, from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia *bītŭlo- rather than directly from Latin betula. Ultimately from Proto-Celtic *betu- (birch), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷet- (resin, pitch).
