From Middle English betinen, betynen, bitunen, bituinen, from Old English betȳnan (“to hedge in, enclose, shut, bury; shut out; conclude, end”), from Proto-Germanic *bitūnijaną (“to inclose, hedge about”), equivalent to be- + tine. Cognate with Middle Dutch betuinen, Middle High German beziunen.
