Either from berbec +‎ -ar or from Vulgar Latin *vervēcārius, from Latin vervex (Also attested as Medieval Latin birbicārius or berbicārius). Compare Aromanian birbicar, French berger, Sardinian berbecarju, berbecàlgiu, berbegarzu.
