From Proto-Albanian *balbā, from Proto-Indo-European *bal-bal- 'barbaric speech', of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate to Ancient Greek βαβάζω (babázō, “chats, talks indistinctly”), Latin balbūtiō (“to stammer, stutter”), Lithuanian blebénti (“babble”).
