Etymology
From Old High German bītan, from Proto-Germanic *bīdaną (“to wait, await”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰéydʰeti (“to trust”). Compare English bide, Icelandic bíða, Danish bie, Gothic 𐌱𐌴𐌹𐌳𐌰𐌽 (beidan). Cognate with Ancient Greek πείθω (peíthō, “convince, obey, believe”), Latin fīdō (“trust, rely”).
