From archaic and dialectal balgë, balëgë, from Old Albanian baljëgë, from Proto-Albanian *balgā, from Proto-Indo-European *bolgʷ- (compare Greek βολβός (volvós, “bulb”), Armenian բողկ (bołk, “radish”)). Borrowed as Romanian baligă; metathetic bagël gave northern Italian bagola, bagula.
