bâtir
See also: batir
French
Etymology
From Middle French bastir, from Old French bastir (“to build, make, sew”), from Old Frankish *bastijan (“to darn, weave, treat hemp threads”), from Proto-Germanic *bastijaną (“to bind with a thread, lace”), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *bhas-, *bhasḱ-, *bhask- (“to bind, bundle”). Cognate with Old High German besten (“to sew, weave, lace”), Old English bæst (“bast”). More at bast.
