From Late Latin Agustus, from Latin augustus (“month of August”), from the agnomen Augustus (“venerable”) of Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus, probably from Latin augeō (“to increase”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewg-, whence also the adjective augsts.
