From Vulgar Latin *amendoi, from ambi dui, from Latin ambō (“both”) + dui, duae, from duo (“two”). Compare Aromanian amindoilji, andoilji. Cf. also Old Italian amendue, Engadine amenduos, Old French andui, Occitan amdui.
