From Late Latin acolythus, acoluthus, from Ancient Greek ἀκόλουθος (akólouthos, “follower, attendant”), from ἀ (a) (copulative prefix) + κόλουθος (kólouthos, “track, path, road, way”), from Proto-Indo-European *qeleu (see also Lithuanian kelias (“way”). Compare French acolyte.
