From Old High German *zēwa, a regional variant of zēha, from Proto-Germanic *taihwǭ, from Proto-Indo-European *deyḱ- (to point out). Cognate with Luxembourgish Zéif, German Zehe (clove, toe), Dutch teen, West Frisian tean, English toe, Icelandic , Swedish . From the same Proto-Indo-European root as Ancient Greek δίκη (díkē, custom, law, trial, justice), Sanskrit दिशा (diśā, direction), Latin digitus (finger, toe, twig).
