From Middle High German zarge "side wall, frame, embankment" from Old High German zarga "rim, side wall" from Proto-Germanic *targǭ (“edge”), from Proto-Indo-European *dArg'h- (“fenced lot”). Akin to Old Norse targa "small shield". More at targe.
