From Old High German werī, from Proto-Germanic *warīniz (“defense”), from *warjaną (“to ward off, defend”), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to heed, notice”). Compare German Wehr, Dutch weer, Icelandic vörn, Swedish värn. From the same Proto-Indo-European root as English aware (“vigilant”), German Wart (“guard”), Latin vereor (“I revere; I fear”), Ancient Greek ὁράω (horáō, “to see”).
