From Old High German dorn, from Proto-Germanic *þurnuz, from Proto-Indo-European *tr̥nós (“sharp, stiff”). Cognate with German Dorn, Dutch doorn, English thorn, Icelandic þyrnir, Swedish törne. Non-Germanic cognates include Sanskrit तृण (tṛṇa, “grass, straw”), Old Church Slavonic трьнъ (trĭnŭ, “thorn”).
