Etymology

Shorthand for Ephraem Sȳrus, itself a calque of the Ancient Greek Ἐφραίμ (Ephraím) ὁ (ho) Σῦρος (Sûros) (Ephraím (Ephraím) ho (ho) Sûros (Sûros)); alone, Sȳrus literally means simply “the Syrian”.
