From Middle Low German sprēker, sprēkere (also sprāker, sprākere), a regularisation of earlier Middle Low German sprēke (“speaker”), from Old Saxon *spreko, from Proto-Germanic *sprekô (“speaker”), equivalent to spreken +‎ -er.
