From Middle High German ram, rame f (“column, frame”), from Old High German rama f (“support”), from Proto-Germanic *ramō (“prop, frame”), probably from Proto-Indo-European *rem(w)- (“to rest, prop up; a support, base”). Cognate with Middle Low German rāme m, Middle Dutch rāme m, Dutch raam n. Related to German Rand m (“edge”) and German Ranft m (“crust of bread”) (see also German Kanten), Old High German ramft, Middle High German ranft, ramft (“edge, edging”), Gothic 𐍂𐌹𐌼𐌹𐍃 (rimis, “silence”), Sanskrit रमते (rámate, “he sets at rest”), रम्भ (rambhá, “prop, staff, support”).
