Etymology
With irregular shortening of the stem vowel from Middle High German rüezel, from Old High German *ruozil, derived from the verb Old High German ruozan (“to grub, root”), from Proto-Germanic *wrōtaną, whence also Dutch wroeten (“to grub”) and English root.
