"Most New" or "Newest", pertaining to the glacial period, coined in 1839 by Charles Lyell from the Greek πλεῖστος (pleîstos, “most”) (superlative of πολύς (polús, “much”); see poly-) and καινός (kainós, “new”) (latinised as cænus).
