New Latin, from Ancient Greek πίθηκος (píthēkos, “ape”) and New Latin –anthropus from Ancient Greek ἄνθρωπος (ánthrōpos, “man”).

- A former taxonomic genus in the family Hominidae, whose species are now assigned to the genus Homo. It was first used as the generic name for what is now called Homo erectus erectus (Java man).
