Origin uncertain. Perhaps borrowed from Middle Latin charavallium (noise and clamor at a wedding), or Old French's chalivali, charivari (French charivari), from Greek karēbaría (καρηβαρία), meaning 'heaviness of the head, dizziness, headache'.
