From French Cambodge and Portuguese Camboja. Both these words are derived from Middle Khmer Kambuja (Modern Khmer, Kampuchea). Ultimately from Sanskrit काम्बोज (kāmbōja, “a tribe mentioned in Hindu scripture”).
