From Old English Wiht, Wihte ealond, Latin Vecta (c.150), from Celtic Ictis (literally nether), akin to Old Irish icht (nether, bottom), Muir n-Icht (English Channel, literally the nether sea), referring to the fact that the Isle of Wight is the southern-most of the British Isles.
