Etymology 1
From Middle High German hert, from Old High German herta, from Proto-Germanic *herdō, from Proto-Indo-European *kerdʰ- (“file, row, herd”). The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German hērde). Cognate with English herd, Danish and Swedish hjord, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌳𐌰 (hairda).
