Etymology
From Middle High German herberge, from Old High German heriberga, from Proto-Germanic *harjabergō. Analysable as Heer (“army”) + a derivative of bergen (“to shelter”), thus “accommodation for an army”. Cognate with Dutch herberg, English harbor and harbinger, French auberge, Italian albergo.
