From Arabic قَالَنْجَان (qālanjān) (cognate with Persian قولنجان (kūlinjān), Sanskrit कुलञ्जन (kulañjana)), perhaps from Sinitic 高良薑 (read gāoliángjiāng in modern Mandarin), from 高良 (gāoliáng) (a district in China) + (jiāng, ginger).
