From Old High German pferrih (“fence”), possibly from Proto-Germanic *parrikaz, an alternative of *parrukaz (“fence, enclosure”). Compare with German Pferch (“animal pen”), Dutch perk (“flowerbed”), English paddock, Swedish park (“park”).
