The spelling Erdgeschoß was deprecated in 1996 in the German spelling reform of 1996 (the Rechtschreibreform). However, it remains in use in Austria because the word is pronounced with a long vowel in Austrian German (as opposed to Standard German, where it is pronounced with a short vowel).
