Etymology

Probably merged from three medieval Germanic personal names. The second part is rīhhi (“ruler”). The first part is Proto-Germanic *amal (“vigor, bravery”), heim (“home”), or Proto-Germanic *ermunaz (“all,complete”). Cognate to Hungarian Imre. Comparable to English Emery and Amory, and distantly to Henry. See also Italian Enrico and Amerigo, from the latter of which America is derived.
