Emmerich

German

Etymology

Probably merged from three medieval Germanic personal names. The second part is rīhhi (ruler). The first part is Proto-Germanic *amal (vigor, bravery), heim (home), or Proto-Germanic *ermunaz (all, complete). Cognate to Hungarian Imre. Comparable to English Emery and Amory, and distantly to Henry. See also Italian Enrico and Amerigo, from the latter of which America is derived.
