From Old High German chniu, from Proto-Germanic *knewą, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵónu. Cognate with German Knie, Dutch knie, English knee, Icelandic hné, Swedish knä. From the same Proto-Indo-European root as Albanian gju, Old Armenian ծունգք (cungkʿ), Irish glúin, Welsh glin, Ancient Greek γόνῠ (gónu), Sanskrit जानु (jānu), Persian زانو (zânu), Latin genū, Tocharian B keni (“knees”).
