From Proto-Indo-European *bhlǝido-s (“pale”), from the Illyrian name *Blaedarus, probably cognate to Albanian blehurë from proto-Albanian *blaidura. Compare Old Church Slavonic blědъ (blědŭ, “pallid, pale, wan”), Old English blāt (“pallid, livid”), Old High German bleizza (“paleness”).
