Probably from Proto-Armenian *ēs-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁é-h₁es-, the old imperfect (past indicative) stem of *h₁ésti (“to be”).

-ի- • (-i-)
- a vowel characterizing most of the imperfect endings of verbs
