From Proto-Indo-European *pedóm (step; bottom, floor), derived from *ped- (to walk, to step). See also Hittite 𒉺𒋫 (pa-ta, foot). Cognates include Ancient Greek πέδον (pédon, floor, ground), Sanskrit पद (padá, step, footstep, footprint),Old Norse fet (step), Old Armenian հետ (het, footprint, track).
