From Proto-Iranian *daywáh (compare Old Persian 𐎭𐎡𐎺 (daiva) and Persian دیو‎ (dēw)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *daywás (compare Sanskrit देव (devá)), from Proto-Indo-European *deywós.

Semantic shift from original Indo-Iranian "god". In Indo-Aryan it retains this meaning, but it changes in Old Iranian into "demon".
