First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 방긔 (pangkuy). Nativisation of 방기 (放氣, banggi, “releasing gas”), possibly influenced by 뀌— (kkwi, “to break, to release (wind)”).
