Etymology
From the Ancient Greek root *ῥευ- (*rheu-), whence ῥέω (rhéō, “I flow”) (from Proto-Indo-European *srew- (“flow”)), and -μα (-ma). Compare the related Proto-Indo-European *srowmos, whence also Old English stream. See also ῥυθμός (rhuthmós).
