Etymology

Said by Herodotus to be an illegitimate son of Apollo and Creusa. Likely of Pre-Greek origin, or possibly sharing a Proto-Indo-European origin with Sanskrit योनी (yonī, “womb, vagina”), a reference to the Ionians' goddess-worshipping.
