Uncertain. Perhaps from a Proto-Indo-European *h₂endʰos, with cognates including Sanskrit अन्धस् (andhas, “grass, cabbage”), Albanian end, Old Armenian անդ (and, “field”), and possibly Old Frisian åndul.
