From ἄγκος (ánkos, “bend”). Possibly corresponding to Proto-Indo-European *h₂engulos (“joint?”). Cognates include Latin angulus, Sanskrit अङ्गुरि (aṅgúri, “finger, toe”), Old High German enchil (“ankle, joint”), and Old Church Slavonic ѫгълъ (ǫgŭlŭ, “angle”). Compare also Old Armenian անգղ (angł).
