From Old Georgian, from Proto-Kartvelian *ṗerṗer-, which is a reduplication of Proto-Kartvelian *ṗer- (to fly) (whence also ფრენა (prena)). Perhaps derived from Proto-Indo-European *pāpel-, *peypel- (butterfly).
