From Old Georgian, probably from an Iranian source; compare Persian ناو (nāv, boat), Old Persian [script needed] (nāviyā, navy). Alternatively, according to Ačaṙyan and Illič-Svityč (apud Martirosyan), from Old Armenian նաւ (naw).

Alternatively, from Ancient Greek ναύς (naús).
